I believe that Social Security and Medicare are not entitlements, but rather rights which every American has earned. As a society, we have formed a pact with our seniors to provide them with a high quality of life and these programs are the backbone of that pact. I will always fight to secure and strengthen these programs, as opposed to those who wish to cut benefits and transform them into voucher systems. Those actions would destroy Social Security and Medicare as we know them, which is an unacceptable result not only for this generation, but all future generations.
Every policy issue I am focused on has a direct and tangible benefit to seniors. Many seniors are on Medicaid in order to supplement healthcare costs that are not covered by Medicare. Due to the fact that many seniors are on a fixed income, any relief that can come in the form of expanded healthcare coverage, will lead to more financial security, and ultimately a better quality of life. I am advocating for Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act which would greatly benefit seniors.
My proposed reforms to the state's education system will improve the lives of the individuals seniors love most, their grandchildren. Grandchildren will have the resources they need to succeed, and will no longer be encumbered by burdensome high-stakes testing. Grandchildren will have the opportunity to expand their cultural horizons through the increased fine arts curriculum. Grandchildren who want to pursue a career in teaching will be able to enter the profession that will provide a more competitive wage, and continuing educational opportunities to help improve their performance in the classroom.
My position on energy will lower costs for seniors by providing clean renewable sources of energy. Helping to lower the cost of energy will benefit all seniors, but specifically those seniors who are on fixed income, and cannot afford a spike in energy prices.
Environmental protection benefits seniors by providing them with clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, and safe food to eat. I will fight to make sure that seniors continue to have an exceptional quality of life, and that the benefits they have worked for during their life remain intact.
